The species most commonly kept as pets in the United States are the Caribbean Hermit Crab (Coenobita clypeatus) and the Pacific Hermit Crab (Coenobita compressus). In Europe, the Common Hermit Crab (Eupagurus bernhardus) is popular.
The two terrestrial species of hermit crabs found in Australia are the Australian Land Hermit Crab (Coenobita variabilis) and the Strawberry Land Hermit Crab (Coenobita perlatus). The variabilis species is found in the northern parts of Australia, including northern Western Australia, the Northern Territory and northern Queensland. Start with a 10-gallon tank with lid for a small group of 4 to 6 crabs.
The hermit crab tank should have a substrate of sand, the best type of which is the calcium rich ones like T-Rex bone aid Calci-Sand. They are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods which include dried shrimps, vegetables, pieces of wood (not conifers) subsidized with treats such as peanut butter.
Keep the tank between 72 and 84 degrees. Landscape with various select pieces of driftwood, branches, cork bark, rocks and a variety of switching shells for the animals as they grow. Provided two choices of dechlorinated water, one with salt in a shallow easily accessible dish. Your crab also should occasionally be given a supplement vitamin/calcium powder.
